Here are the top video game releases for the month of October 2017. October 3:
Forza Motorsport 7 (Windows PC and Xbox One) — Polygon’s Colin Campbell recently spent an hour playing through the early parts of Forza 7‘s single player campaign. Check out his write up and 30 minutes of stunning visuals captured on the Xbox One X.
October 5:
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) — Those who love it, love it. Those who don’t love it, well, don’t love it. This cult classic was released in 2012 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and finally came to PC in 2016 after fans petitioned for years. Here’s our review of the base game and the Dark Arisen expansion.
October 6:
Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy (Nintendo 3DS) — This charming, manga-esque, brain-teasing puzzle game was released on iOS and Android earlier this year and is quite the trickster according to Polygon’s Allegra Frank. It even has some math, and as we all know, numbers are hard.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo 3DS) — This is a reimagining of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, which was released in 2003 on Gameboy Advance. In Bowser’s Minions, players take control of Captain Goomba. The goal is collect as many minions as possible and save Bowser who, according to the Nintendo reps presenting the game, is going through a bit of a hard time. The new addition to the game is played at length in this gameplay video.
October 10:
Middle-earth: Shadow of War (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — Polygon’s Colin Campbell went hands-on with the game at E3 2017, here’s what he had to say:
“Shadow of War is one of those sequels that doesn’t change a winning formula. When I asked a Monolith rep what was changing in the new game, he said it was a case of ‘bigger and more.’ Bigger maps, bigger story, bigger encampments. More orcs, more skills, more creatures. That sounds just fine by me.”
October 13:
The Evil Within 2 (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — The game will take place largely in an alternate dimension called the STEM world populated by hideous creatures. Valentini, according to the trailer’s description, is one of the STEM world’s “human monsters.” The video shows Valentini in his morgue-like darkroom surrounded by grisly photographs and severed limbs. October 17:
Gran Turismo Sport (PlayStation 4) — Gran Turismo Sport is the first game in the famed racing series to appear on PS4. The last game, Gran Turismo 6, came out on PlayStation 3 in 2013. A beta was due to begin a year ago, but was canceled. Sony also delayed the game’s launch from Nov. 15, 2016 to Oct. 2017. You can enjoy a gallery of Gran Turismo Sport screens here.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — The Fractured But Whole trades its predecessor’s fantasy theme for a superhero theme. Much like the TV show, the game dives right into social commentary with its unique take on difficulty settings, which revolves around the skin color of your character.
October 20:
Fire Emblem Warriors (Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch) — Fire Emblem Warriors will allow players to take control of fan-favorite characters like Marth, Xander and Corrin as you enter into some pretty intense hack-and-slash battles. During Nintendo’s Treehouse livestream, the publisher showed off nearly 30 minutes of gameplay. In that time, the focus was mostly on the different combat scenarios players will find themselves in, but there were a few hints at what to expect out of the game’s story. The video concluded with the announcement that Chrom and Tiki, recently featured in Fire Emblem Heroes, will be available as amiibo figures this year.
Syberia 3 (Nintendo Switch) — Syberia 3, the third entry in Microïds’ acclaimed surreal steampunk adventure game series, brings back Benoît Sokal, the writer of the first two games. The Syberia series began with the launch of the original Syberia on PC in 2002 and continued with a sequel, Syberia 2, in 2004. Both titles were later released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The games concern the adventures of American lawyer Kate Walker. She travels to a village in a mountainous region of France to oversee the buyout of a toy factory, but her quest to find the rightful owner takes her across central and eastern Europe — and eventually to the land of Syberia in Russia, which is said to contain surviving remnants of the woolly mammoth species. A Nintendo Switch port is set to release sometime in 2017.
October 24:
Destiny 2 (Windows PC) — “Destiny 2 finally delivers on all the promise of its predecessor.” This quote from our review of the game sums up our thoughts on the sequel to Bungie’s first game since leaving Microsoft. The PC version will be the first non-Blizzard developed title to use the Battle.net launcher, but Blizzard made it clear that they have no plans to open up its platform to other third-party games.
October 27:
Assassin’s Creed: Origins (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — Assassin’s Creed Origins takes place in ancient Egypt, thousands of years before every other Assassin’s Creed game. Open-world gaming is a foundational element of the Assassin’s Creed series, and the environment of Origins looks massive. Great pyramids, sculptures of deities, rocky cliffs and reedy swamps are all on display in the trailer. A more recent trailer shows us the opposing faction, the Order of Ancients. The video sets them up as the real force of power behind the pharaoh. They’re shown wearing elaborate metal masks to hide their identity. Have an extra $800 lying around? Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo Switch) — Possessing creatures with your hat, selfies, and Mario’s nipples. Mario’s meme machine midlife crisis adventure is shaping up to be a really weird one with tons of unique worlds to explore. Maybe we’ll get to meet New Donk Giraffe?

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — You’re going to be doing one thing, and one thing only. Killin’ Nazis.
The following synopsis of the game is all you need to know:
“The Nazis have taken over America. They’ve turned Manhattan into a wasteland. They’ve walled off New Orleans and are systematically purging the city, burning people and homes to the ground. And they brazenly walk the streets of small-town USA — going where they want, taking what they want and behaving however they please. But this is not B.J. Blazkowicz’s America. The United States will never be broken – especially with B.J. on the job, rallying the Resistance and igniting a revolution.”
