Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus has been developed without multiplayer to ensure that the storytelling is not “diluted”

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, MachineGames’ Tommy Tordsson Bjork talked about the team’s single-player focus when developing the sequel.

“The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player. Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once.”

Tjordsson Bjork further went on to clarify that MachineGames do not believe they are a first-person shooter developer.

“We call them action adventures rather than shooters because we feel there’s so much more to them than just shooting.”

The interview also touched upon MachineGames’ thoughts on the real-world parallels within their story, including the political commentary present in their marketing.

Tordsson Bjork made it clear that the game was not a conscious attempt to comment on modern politics, (the story was first conceived in 2014) but the contrasts can only improve the storytelling.

“You can feel the emotion better if you have something to contrast it; the light and the dark, humour and seriousness. Those contrasts are what I like about storytelling”

“It’s horrible seeing Nazis in America, but we started writing this story back in 2014. We couldn’t possibly know what was going to happen by 2017. What we want to do when we write the story is to make something more timeless, and not a specific commentary on our time.”
