All nukes have not actually been dismantled, says Konami.
Over two years after its release, a hidden cutscene within Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has suddenly been unlocked, and Konami says it’s not sure what caused it.
The nuclear disarmament cutscene was discovered by dataminers, and subsequently posted on YouTube, shortly after The Phantom Pain was released in September 2015. However, the condition necessary to authentically trigger the cutscene has long been considered nearly impossible to meet: all nuclear weapons at the FOBs of every player on a specific platform have to be dismantled.
On February 2, the cutscene was finally triggered on the PC version of The Phantom Pain. However, according to the official Japanese Metal Gear Twitter account, Steam users possessed nearly 10,000 nukes as of September 1, making the relatively sudden drop to zero highly unlikely.
Konami has since confirmed the cutscene was triggered without the nuke count actually reaching zero, though it didn’t offer an explanation as to what happened. “We would like to apologize for the inconvenience and reassure you that we will investigate the matter as well as take the necessary action to avoid this in the future,” wrote the company on Twitter.
