Infected now available on consoles

Developer Treyarch just released an update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, the studio’s 2015 entry in the series, adding a new game mode and a new map.

The new game mode is Infected, which first appeared in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and later appeared in Ghosts, Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. Here’s Treyarch’s official description of the mode as it appears in Black Ops 3:

At the start of a match, one player is randomly chosen as the first infected whose goal is to infect the other players. Once downed, players respawn as infected, slowly increasing the size of the horde. Infect all players, or survive until time runs out to win.

Black Ops 3’s new map is Redwood Snow, a snow-covered version of the existing map Redwood. “Enter the snowcapped landscape of Redwood Snow to experience something colder from the map you know and love,” Treyarch said in a set of patch notes released today. The update also includes new themes for Black Ops 3’s specialists.

The update is intriguing, and not only because it’s a content update for a two-and-a-half-year-old Call of Duty game. Treyarch has a history of dropping teases about upcoming Call of Duty games in older titles. The studio teased Infinite Warfare in Black Ops 3’s version of the Nuketown map in 2016. Players haven’t discovered a comparable teaser in today’s update yet, but they’re already looking for hints in little details like in-game license plates.

Treyarch is confirmed to be behind this year’s Call of Duty game, which is reportedly Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. According to a report from Charlie Intel, Black Ops 4 merchandise has already started to appear in GameStop’s product database.

Call of Duty games are traditionally revealed in late April or early May, so if Activision and Treyarch stay true to their plans, it won’t be long before we see what the next Black Ops game looks like.
