The devil makes work for idle hands, and in the case of Twitter user @november17, that involves painstakingly removing Mario’s facial hair for kicks.

A quite innocent use of spare time you might assume, but when the resultant image was posted on Twitter, things went a bit sideways.

The post has – at the time of writing – been retweeted more than 52,000 times and (for some reason) has over 160,000 likes. Why isn’t there a dislike button?

As you might expect, this nightmarish vision has attracted thousands of comments too, with some Twitter users struggling to hide their disgust while drawing some worrying comparisons at the same time:
