“It feels good to simplify.”
The upcoming addition to the Gears of War franchise will be called Gears 5 rather than Gears of War 5.
Head of The Coalition Rod Fergusson confirmed the name on Twitter, explaining that, while the franchise name is still “Gears of War”, the company decided to shorten the title to fit in with its new family of products.

“Gears of War” is still the franchise name but now that we’re doing a family of products it made more sense to shorten the titles down – Gears Pop, Gears Tactics & Gears 5. Plus we always just call it Gears anyway so it feels good to simplify.

During the Microsoft E3 2018 press conference last week, The Coalition revealed two new additions to the Gears of War franchise alongside Gears 5 – mobile game Gears Pop and turn-based strategy Gears Tactics.
Gears 5 sees Kait Diaz taking front-and-centre as the series’ first female protagonist. When Kait begins having strange dreams, she abandons her squad, and sets out on a journey to uncover what they might mean – to the detriment of her mental and physical well being. The tone seems similar to that in God of War.
Gears 5 is expected to release in 2019.
