In an unexpected twist, Season 5 of Fortnite introduced a surprisingly robust golf simulator

There was a lot of speculation about what Fortnite’s season 5 would include. It’s fair to say that a pretty accurate golf simulation was not high on that list. And yet, thanks to the introduction of what Epic Games is calling “toys,” we have just that.

Toys are exclusive to those who purchase this season’s Battle Pass. Effectively they are emotes, but instead of yielding a goofy dance, they actually generate physical objects in the world: a basketball, a beach ball and, yes, a golf ball.

None of these objects seem to have any tactical value — but fun value? They have that in spades.

The golf balls introduced may be comically oversized, but they do let you play an honest-to-goodness round of golf, thanks to the newly-introduced course of Lazy Links in the northern part of the map.

Rather than just activating a canned animation for where the ball goes, you can actually alter your swing based on where you’re aiming before you hit the emote button. Look to the sky for a drive, look to the ground for a careful putt.

After hitting, your ball will be marked with an arrow tied to your player’s squad color, which makes it easier to keep track of if you’re playing with a foursome. And of course there’s the newly-added golf cart so you don’t have to hoof it around the course.

Granted you’ll have to keep score yourself (like real golf) but if you manage to hit the pin, it’ll let everyone in the area know with a kill feed update, even including the distance you made your shot from.

Fair to say we’re going to be seeing plenty of YouTube shenanigans of people making outrageous shots, but in the meantime we’re just happy for a quiet game on the links.
