Patrick Osborne of the Nimona film adaption is set to direct

Paramount Pictures is bringing another video game-based film to the big screen, because the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film wasn’t enough. Patrick Osborne, who is currently directing the Nimona film adaption, has been tapped to direct a live-action/CG film based on Ustwo’s breakthrough mobile game Monument Valley.

Noted for its forward momentum and strong atmosphere, Monument Valley was widely regarded as one of the best mobile games of 2014. It was an immediate success — less than a year after its release, the game earned Ustwo nearly $5.8 million in revenue, more than enough to make up its development cost of $1.4 million. The game’s popularity spiked further when it appeared on an episode of House of Cards in 2015.

The original game and its sequel both take place in an Escher-like landscape that players navigate the world as the princess Ida. The film will situate live actors in Monument Valley’s dreamy world.

“Monument Valley is a one of a kind experience, at once small in its meditative, simple gameplay, as well as enormous in its sense of history,” Osborne told Deadline. “I’m privileged to be handed the reins to Ida’s mysterious kingdom, to play in her world of impossible architecture where seeing things differently is everything.”
