Things Pokemon: Let’s Go Doesn’t Tell You: Tips, Tricks, and Secrets

This page contains tips and tricks for some of the biggest secrets in Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu — but don’t worry, there’s nothing spoilery. Whether you’re new to the series, a longtime fan, or even just looking for a place to dump those Zubats you caught in Pokemon Go, Let’s Go has something for everyone. Here are a few things you’ll want to know even if you’ve played Pokemon Yellow in the past.
NO BIKE, NO ROD[edit]
Let’s Go places a major emphasis on your Pokemon travel companions, and that includes the way you move through the world and how you encounter random Pokemon. This time around, you’ll ride on the back of Pokemon rather than jumping on a bike, and you’ll surf around to find water-dwelling Pokemon instead of casting a lure. WATER DELAY[edit]
On that note, water Pokemon can mostly only be encountered in….uh, water, so don’t panic if you spend the landlocked first half of the game not finding Poliwag and Staryu. Once your Pikachu or Eevee learns the Secret Technique Sea Skim, you’ll have enough new water Pokemon to fill up an aquarium in no time.

SECRET TECHNIQUES[edit]
Speaking of Secret Techniques, be careful not to miss them. These new moves replace HMs and are essential for traversal around the map, and you obtain them by speaking to specific people in a few of Kanto’s cities. While the Secret Techniques that replace Cut and Flash are hard to miss, the new moves for Fly, Strength, and Surf are hidden away in houses or with folks standing on the street, so make sure you talk to everybody.Check out the Secret Techniques page to see exactly how to unlock them.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO PLAY[edit]
If you’re a 3DS or Game Boy fan looking to play your Switch in handheld mode, you may want to pop those Joy-Cons off every once in a while. By playing docked or tabletop mode, you’ll occasionally get a prompt that lets Pikachu or Eevee perform a devastating can’t-miss move that otherwise isn’t available to you. And trust us, you’ll want to see it at least once. If you have another Pokemon currently battling, you can also use this special move to temporarily buff that Pokemon’s stats.
If you’re looking for rare Pokemon or Shiny Pokemon, catch combos are for you. Each time you consecutively capture the same species of Pokemon, a combo counter will start to appear, and chaining together combos has hidden benefits. After a while, Pokemon you catch will occasionally have better stats, you’ll start to see rare and evolved Pokemon spawning around you, and you’ll be more likely to find a shiny!
Once you’ve started a streak in one location, you can travel anywhere in the game and its effects will continue, so you can find different rare species no matter where you go.
But be careful! If a Pokemon runs away or if you catch any Pokemon other than the species you have a streak for, your combo will end and you’ll be back to square one.

CANDY FACTORY[edit]
One other big reward from a long combo streak is Candy, which you’ll collect a TON of from successful catch combos. Different Pokemon give you different types of candy — Geodude will give you Tough Candy, which increases defense by 1, while Ponyta will give you Quick Candy, which does the same for speed.
The higher a Pokemon’s level (or the more candy you’ve fed it in the past), the more Candy you’ll need to raise a stat. Each Pokemon also has its own candy too, so in the case of Ponyta, if you’re lucky enough to get a Ponyta candy, that will raise all of Ponyta’s stats by 1 regardless of level.
