Louder and Prouder than ever

Disney is ordering a revival of The Proud Family dubbed The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder for Disney Plus, the company announced Thursday. The streaming series will pick up right where the original left off 15 years ago, following teenager Penny Proud and her eccentric family — worrywart father Oscar, veterinarian mother Trudy, baby siblings BeBe and CeCe, and wacky grandma Suga Mama — and her friends. The original voice cast will return, said Disney.

The beloved animated series was not available in the Disney Plus catalog at launch, but arrived there in January. Whispers of a possible Proud Family revival circulated as early as last summer, when Tommy Davidson, the voice of Oscar Proud, mentioned it at a red carpet event.

“In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell,” said creator Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar in a news release. “It’s the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can’t wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us.”

The Proud Family ran for two seasons on the Disney Channel starting in 2001 — it was the first animated Disney Channel Original Series — and concluded with a finale in the form of a movie in 2005. The show centered around an African American family (the titular Proud family) and was notable for its diverse cast. It remains a staple of Disney TV animation to this day.
