It’s not just you

If you’ve tried using any of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ online features recently, you may have stumbled upon a roadblock. Players everywhere are getting server communication errors that prevent online play.

As of this writing, you can’t visit other Animal Crossing islands or open up your gates, nor give out Dodo codes for friends. When I tried to do so, my Switch displayed Error Code: 2219-2502 instead. The official Nintendo website says, “This error code indicates an error occurred when connecting to the service, likely the result of a temporary service outage or a high volume of user access.” The server issues seem to be game-specific rather than for Nintendo Online as a whole — or at least, I was able to see what my friends list was up to. (Update: the eShop seems to load, but after a while, it gives an error and says that it cannot communicate with the server.)

Based on social media posts, the servers have been down for about half an hour, though hopefully they’ll be back soon. You can, of course, just stick to your island for a little while — the online servers are down, but the base game is fine.

What makes this a particular bummer is that, in the middle of social distancing measures, a lot of people are relying on Animal Crossing to get their socializing time in. Now we have to socially distance in New Horizons, too!
