<p>Determination, inspiration, curiosity, and the importance of mentors were just a few of the themes of the sixth annual Science Day at NIH. </p>
<p>Science Day at NIH is a partnership between NLM, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Friends of the National Library of Medicine, and Mentoring in Medicine, a nonprofit organization that works to inspire disadvantaged and low-income students to become health care professionals.</p>
<p>On October 10, over 500 middle and high school students from Washington, D.C., area schools came to the campus of NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, to participate in this event.</p>
<p>In his welcoming remarks, NLM Deputy Director Jerry Sheehan encouraged the students to explore NLM’s resources as a way to help guide them on their journey.</p>
<p>Through speeches, panel discussion, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and “Lunch with a Scientist” sessions, students got to build on their knowledge by learning what it might be like to work in a lab, a medical office, and, of course, a medical library.</p>
