While I didn’t do as much Christmas sewing as I would have liked this year, I have quickly switched gears to focus on everything else that’s on my long to-do list.

One reason for that is our family has been blessed with a significant life change. After years of waiting, in November through the selfless gift of love of her birth parents, my husband and I became parents to the most beautiful little girl. Talk about a Christmas miracle!

We didn’t get a lot of time to prepare (two and a half weeks to be exact)  but we are blessed with a very supportive community of friends and family (a small community at the time because we only told less than a handful of people at first). They helped us gather up the essentials that we needed to welcome this little girl into our home and our family.

One part of all of this that I particularly enjoyed was that my best friend shared with me all of the sewing that I had created for her two young girls. Including one essential item that both my husband and I find invaluable which are these little burp cloths.

These are so easy to make and because they work so perfectly for little spit-ups, my husband recently asked whether I could make a few more. I guess we seem to go through them quite quickly. There’s no “one-size” for these but they are smaller than typical burp cloths and fit nicely on your shoulder to be there just in case.

I made a few of them this week and they are a super easy project. Something I will definitely include in future baby shower gifts for friends and family!

My average size for these clothes is 10 x 17 inches. But keep in mind, they are great stash buster so I went through some of my fabric and picked good size pieces to use even though they didn’t necessarily measure exactly the size above.

To start, take two pieces of fabric and place right sides together. Note: you can use any type of soft fabric. The ones I made this week were mostly high quality quilting cotton that just get softer and softer the more you wash them. A few pieces also used up some extra knit that I had on hand. Those are great to use on the underside so they don’t slip off your shoulder. I’ve also used flannel and minky on some of my cloths as well.

With the fabrics right sides together, sew around all four edges with a 1/2 inch seam leaving a 2 inch opening on one side.

Clip the corners if you like to reduce bulk and then turn right sides out and iron.

Pin the open seam closed and topstitch all around the edge with a 1/4 inch seam to close the opening and finish the edges. On most of mine I did a double topstitch finish because I love the look of a clean finish.

Although on some of them I also found this project was a great opportunity to play with all different stitches on my Janome Skyline S7!

And there you have it. A perfect little burp cloth! These wash up so easily and I’ve been throwing several at a time in our diaper bag when we go out. You never know when you need to clean up a little spit-up (I am learning this quickly!!). Perfect for our little miracle.
