Let us show you how these markings can help you sew perfect seams.</p>
<h2>Starting Needle Position</h2>
<p>The horizontal line that runs across the needle plate indicates where the needle will drop. When you start sewing, simply place the edge of the fabric along this line for a neat start.</p>

<p>5/8” is most often the standard seam allowance for commercial patterns.</p>

<li>When the needle is in the center position, line up the edge of the fabric with this mark to sew a consistent 5/8” seam.</li>
<li>To make a perfect 5/8” pivot, stop sewing when the end of the fabric reaches the mark below. Lift the foot, rotate the fabric lining up the edge with the 5/8” seam mark and sew!</li>

<p>Many craft patterns as well as quilters will use a 1/4” seam allowance.</p>

<h2>Diagonal Placement Lines</h2>
<p>Quilters often use diagonal pieces, the angles used in quilting are 45°, 60°, 90° and 120°.</p>
<p>Machines with a maximum width of 7mm have solid diagonal lines.</p>
<p>Machines with a maximum width of 9mm will have solid and dotted diagonal lines.</p>
<p><a href="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="23007" data-permalink="https://janomelife.wordpress.com/2019/08/12/glad-you-asked-that-what-do-all-the-markings-on-the-needle-plate-mean/attachment/9/" data-orig-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg" data-orig-size="330,232" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="9" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg?w=330" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23007" src="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg?w=330&#038;h=232" alt="" width="330" height="232" srcset="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg 330w, https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg?w=150&amp;h=105 150w, https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/9.jpg?w=300&amp;h=211 300w" sizes="(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px" /></a></p>
<p>Solid lines are used with a center needle position. Dotted lines are used with the 1/4” stitch found on all 9mm machines.</p>
<ul>
<li>Attach 1/4” Foot “O”.</li>
<li>Line up the angled edge with the angle on the needle plate.</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="23009" data-permalink="https://janomelife.wordpress.com/2019/08/12/glad-you-asked-that-what-do-all-the-markings-on-the-needle-plate-mean/attachment/10/" data-orig-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg" data-orig-size="215,226" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="10" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg?w=215" data-large-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg?w=215" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23009" src="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg?w=215&#038;h=226" alt="" width="215" height="226" srcset="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg 215w, https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/10.jpg?w=143&amp;h=150 143w" sizes="(max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li>Line up the opposite edge with the guide on the foot. The needle will automatically drop a 1/4” in from the edge.</li>
<li>Use the guide on the foot to stop a 1/4” from the end.<a href="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/8.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="23006" data-permalink="https://janomelife.wordpress.com/2019/08/12/glad-you-asked-that-what-do-all-the-markings-on-the-needle-plate-mean/attachment/8/" data-orig-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/8.jpg" data-orig-size="121,213" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="8" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/8.jpg?w=121" data-large-file="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/8.jpg?w=121" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23006" src="https://janomelife.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/8.jpg?w=121&#038;h=213" alt="" width="121" height="213" /></a></li>
</ul>
<h2>Other Seam Allowances</h2>
<p>There are times you may choose to use a different seam allowance or hem width.</p>
<ul>
<li>Simply look at the needle plate to find the desired width.</li>
<li>Your machine came with a quilt guide. Simply insert it in the foot holder and adjust it to the desired width. The maximum width of this guide right of the needle is 2 1/2”.</li>
<li>The optional Long Quilting Bar Set is (202025003) designed to fit all 9mm machines. You can use these guides for seams up to 4 1/4” on either side of the needle.</li>
