You will need 2 fabrics sewn together along the length. The inner small flange or accent colour and the outer main colour: The accent colour fabric is cut 1 3/4″ x width of fabric and the outer colour fabric is cut 1 1/2″ x width of fabric.

With right sides together, sew along the length the two strips using a 1/4″ seam. Press or set the seam and then press seam towards the outer colour fabric.

Fold the seam along the centre matching the edges. The accent colour will end up about 1/8″ wide. Press the length of the seam.

Sew the binding using a 1/4″ seam onto  the back of the quilt matching the edges and with the flange side down. Proceed sewing to the corner and stop 1/4″ from the corner. Stop and turn the quilt to create a mitered corner. Continue to sew all around the quilt and join the ends as usual using a mitered technique.

On the back side of the quilt, press the binding away from quilt so it lies flat. Then fold the binding to the front.

Machine stitch in the ditch of the flange fabric using a stitch in the ditch or clear foot. If you have a walking foot with ditch quilting guide, this works even better as it feeds from the upper,as,well,as lower feed dogs. ( Convertible Evenfeed foot set OR acufeed flex ditch quilting foot). 

Matching the colour of the thread with the accent colour of the binding helps to hide the stitches.

Now you can finish binding all those quilts by machine that need binding!
