INVERSUS Deluxe review

INVERSUS Deluxe is a stylised take on the shoot’em-up genre adopting a minimalist approach to the standard side-scrolling fare of endless Gradius clones. That being said, Hypersect don’t shy away from many aspects of what makes the genre great and add R-Type power-up shots (unleashing a triple shot) along with the standard single shots.

The premise is as simple as the game looks: defeat the opposition. INVERSUS Deluxe takes place on a grid with two gameplay modes: Versus and Arcade. Arcade is the typical single-player mode (although also allows for two-player co-op) with the objective being to progress through multiple levels, level up and unlock new colour palettes.

Sounds simple enough although the twist is; you can only move along the correct corresponding colour giving the game a somewhat Splatoon dynamic. Versus is the typical multi-player mode (and also accommodates Billy-no-mates such as myself) and consists of One Versus One or Two Versus Two battles either off or online.

A great inclusion in online is being able to practice whilst waiting to join a room. Versus battles are fast and frantic and often not drawn out chess matches. This fast-pace works in the game’s favour and to some degree competes with the likes of classic Bomberman, Butasan and Penguin Wars in the multi-player battle game stakes.

Conclusion

It’s easy to dismiss INVERSUS Deluxe due to the almost early-80′s nature of its graphics, but here you are missing the point entirely. INVERSUS Deluxe’s stylised look gives the game a unique flavour that along with its fast-paced action combine to deliver another fun eShop title, although there’s a limit to how much depth is on offer.
