After moving to New York in 1954 he played bop with Kenny Dorham&#8217;s Jazz Prophets (1956), Chet Baker (1956-57), Sonny Stitt (1957), and Maynard Ferguson (1957-58).<a href="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="3457" data-permalink="https://jazzatelier.com/2010/09/24/bobby-timmons-bio/btim/" data-orig-file="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg" data-orig-size="503,670" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="btim" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=225" data-large-file="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=503" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3457" title="btim" src="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=225&#038;h=300" alt="Bobby Timmons" width="225" height="300" srcset="https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=225&amp;h=300 225w, https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=450&amp;h=600 450w, https://jazzatelier.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/btim.jpg?w=72&amp;h=96 72w" sizes="(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px" /></a></p>
<p>While a member of Art Blakey&#8217;s Jazz Messengers (1958-59), with whom he toured Europe, he became well known for his composition <em>Moanin&#8217;</em>, a funky, gospel-oriented tune. From 1959 to 1960 Timmons worked with Cannonball Adderley and recorded two further soul-jazz compositions that became hits, <em>This Here</em> (also called <em>Dis Here</em>) and <em>Dat Dere</em>.</p>
<p>He rejoined Blakey briefly in 1960, but thereafter his career declined rapidly because of alcoholism, possibly brought on by artistic frustration. Timmons was a<strong> sophisticated and versatile pianist</strong>, but he became stereotyped and inhibited by the success of his simple compositions.</p>
