This morning in our series of reviews of the last year we are heading down over to South London and taking a look back at the year of Street Art & Graffiti in Leake Street. Leake Street represents London’s premier legal Graffiti location, located in the Old Vic tunnels beneath Waterloo Station, made famous as a result of Banksy’s CANS Festivals and has since gone on to become host to such premier events in the Street Art calendar as Femme Fierce and The Battle of Waterloo. No other place in London offers such a high turnover of fresh works, with several new pieces guaranteed to be spied daily. It is quite rare in fact to pass through and not find at least someone painting on their newest work.
Highlights for the year here for us include some great Paint Jams, with the Femme Fierce Reloaded event, hands down one of our absolute favourite days this year, with many beautiful works. The Battle of Waterloo & The Star Wars & Fresh Paint Jams more recently. Additionally it is fantastic to see the dead space on the ceiling get some fantastic works placed up this year, really tying the centre of the tunnel together. Beyond this we have seen many wonderful works, fortunate in catching before defaced or just replaced, in a way making a good find in Leake Street, one of the most rewarding. Some visits are more interesting than others, but it is rare to pass through and not find something new to catch your eye, so without further ado here is a year of London Calling Blog visits to Leake Street through 2015.
