This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is probably my new favorite one to put together! Well, I say that before actually putting it together, but the concept is fun! The following are my top ten books released in the last decade — one for each year! I am going to go 2009-2018 because who knows what my favorite book of 2019 will be? Thankfully I have built in tags on Goodreads for published years — worth the organization!
A couple of things of note: if I mention a book that is part of a series, I am not going to list every book of the series, though those books are most likely going to be high on my list every year. (There are exceptions to this, of course, but they’re rare.)
Soulless by Gail Carriger
I just read a short story set in this world, and actually pulled Soulless out again! I am excited to get back in this steampunk/supernatural world.
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
I loved this series, and I loved this book. I know a lot of people have issues with this book, but I think it is well done. And I sob every time I read it, of course. I love all three books, though 2 is a bit lacking compared to the first and third.
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
This book is ridiculously wonderful. It is a satirical all female version of Lord of the Flies, and I think it is incredibly well done. Also, I highly recommend the audiobook – it is a trip in and of itself.
The Diviners by Libba Bray
This is actually the first year that is a bit tough for me! I am going to go with The Diviners by Libba Bray, which probably makes me a broken record. This is the first book on this list that I probably push in front of everyone. 1920s, ghost villain, psychics READ THIS.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Another broken record, I know. But Fangirl hits home with any introverted reader who happens to love fan fiction. I don’t love all of Rainbow Rowell’s work, but she stays on my list of immediate buys.
You by Caroline Kepnes
Another one that I highly recommend as an audiobook! Santino Fontana does the recording, and he is absolutely perfect. I know Penn Badgley plays Joe in the show, but I would have loved to see the version with Santino.
A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab
Like so many others I know, 2015 is the year I found Schwab’s work and fell in love. A Darker Shade of Magic is still one of my favorite books of all time. If you haven’t read it, pick it up! Now!
Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
I am weird about the fantasy I love, and this novella (and it’s continuing series) touch on the kind of whimsical fantasy I adore. It is a series about kids who opened doors to a different world, but were forced to come back to the real world. How do you cope with life? You don’t.
Oh man, I went from one or two books a year at 5 stars to 29 this year?! Either my tastes are getting worse, or I am curtailing what I like more. Either way, this is an incredibly tough year to pick. Like, I have finished off the rest of my list and have restructured everything, and I still haven’t picked a book. I am torn between Geekerella, The Unstoppable Wasp, The Hate U Give, and Shadowhouse Fall, but ultimately, I think my favorite books is: (see what I did there? ahem)

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
2018 is another incredibly rough year for me to pick a book from, because I apparently gave 35 books published that year a 5 star rating. I am going to have to go with Saga Volume 9, only because I absolutely love the series and haven’t mentioned it yet. Plus, this volume is right before the hiatus, and it is a game changer for sure. Though it makes me twitchy, because I can easily make a top ten of books that came out in 2018 without even breaking a sweat.
