(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – High school seniors often complain about their stressful schedules. Many senior Mustangs, however, think nothing about giving their time to others.

LRHS seniors who receive 300 or more community service hours earn  special cord to wear at graduation and 39 seniors qualify for the honor.

The cord worn at graduation for community service is light blue. The only other cord worn at graduation is the National Honor Society’s gold one.

Senior Michaela Oglesby has the most community service hours of the 2014 class.

“A lot of people undervalue community services, they just want the hours for bright futures or a special cord at graduation. I want to involve more people in it,” said Oglesby.

Michaela gets her community service hours from her family’s non-profit animal rescue by helping out with medical care of the animals.

“It’s a good way to learn about yourself by giving back to the community,” said Oglesby, who wants to be a veterinarian.
