RAMALLAH, (PIC)– President of the illegitimate Palestinian government in Ramallah Salaam Fayyad admitted to the existence of human rights violations in West Bank prisons under his jurisdiction, guaranteeing that all violators will be prosecuted.

Fayyad spoke during a local radio interview Wednesday to tackle the human rights situation and strengthen awareness about the importance of adherence to human rights standards and principles.

Rights organizations have complained of the Fatah authority’s abuse and non-compliance with legal procedures when detaining citizens, and the PA security militia’s prosecution of civilians in military courts, a practice that conflicts with the basic Palestinian law, which rights groups consider constitutional.

Fayyad pledged during the talk to reinforce security and safety for citizens in the homeland and to preserve human rights and public and private freedoms.

Hundreds of West Bank citizens have been abused and tortured on charges or suspicion of belonging to Hamas and other Islamic movements. Haytham Amr, Mohammed al-Hajj, Majd Al-Barghouthi, and Kamaal Abu Taeema were among those who were killed after being punished over such charges.

Rights groups in Palestine have continually complained over the worsening human rights and freedom of expression conditions in the West Bank, as the Fatah authority continues to hold hundreds of Hamas supporters, journalists, and politicians in detention.
