NABLUS, (PIC)– A Palestinian prisoner suffering disability in his feet has appealed to the Red Cross, prisoners’ ministry, and all human rights groups to urgently provide him with a new wheelchair to facilitate his movement.

Ahmed Al-Beitawi, a researcher in the Tadamun institution for human rights, said on Monday that the prisoner, Ashraf Suleiman, from the village of Beit Awwa, Al-Khalil, was apprehended five years ago while on wheelchair as a result of muscle atrophy.

Ever since then the wheelchair never changed and it is now in a very bad state, Beitawi said, adding that the prisoner, who is serving a six and half years sentence, cannot sit on his old wheelchair fearing he would fall down because its wheels are worn out.

He said Suleiman could not remain seated on his bed because it causes him joint pain.

An Israeli court had allowed physical therapy for Suleiman five times a week but the Ramle prison hospital doctor refused, saying that the court ruling does not bind him.

More than 20 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails could only move on wheelchairs or crutches with no proper medical treatment on the part of the prisons’ authorities.
