<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Knesset Member Fania Kirshenbaum (Yisrael Beitenu) has proposed to establish a parliamentary investigative committee to examine the actions and finances of Israeli organizations and individuals who collect information about Israeli soldiers, reported the Hebrew language site nrg.co.il yesterday (3 January).</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"></p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><img style="vertical-align:middle;border:3px solid #000000;margin:5px;" src="https://i1.wp.com/www.alternativenews.org/english/images/stories/news/2011/january_2011/gaza.jpg" alt="gaza" width="600" height="354" /></p>
<p></span></span><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">According to MK Kirshenbaum, the organizations to be investigated directly harm the manner in which Israel is perceived in the world. “Actions of Israeli organizations are a serious blow to the legitimacy of Israel in the world,” she said to nrg.co.il.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Amongst the organizations mentioned in connection with the investigative committee are Breaking the Silence, Btselem, MachsomWatch and individual activists suspected of providing personal data about officers and soldiers for internet publication.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">“Cooperation of international organizations and Israeli organizations to harm the IDF, its soldiers and commanders, must be investigated and stopped,” said MK Kirshenbaum. “The actions of these organizations, mostly funded by international anti-Zionist bodies and even foreign countries, represent a substantial and troublesome part of the campaign of delegitimisation of the state of Israel in the world. We will act will all power to reach the truth and bring about the end of this harmful activity.”</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The proposal to establish an investigative committee was submitted on 3 January and  will be raised for discussion on 5 January. In the explanatory notes attached to the proposal, Yisrael Beitenu contends that these Israeli organizations exploit the “human rights discourse”, encourage Israeli youth to “shirk” military service and act to label Israeli soldiers and their commanders as war criminals. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> <strong> </strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The proposal of Yisrael Beitenu has received support from the right-wing parties in Knesset, including a majority of Likud MKs. MK Nahman Shai (Kadima) said in response to the proposal that “Yisrael Beitenu is shooting itself in the foot. These initiatives encourage delegitimisation of Israel and raise the anger of international public opinion against us,”  Shai stated.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12pt;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">A parliamentary investigative committee is established by the Knesset plenum in order to deal with topics that elected officials perceive as having special national importance. However, such a committee does not possess authority to summon witnesses, take testimonies under oath or punish.</span></span></p>
