Tel Aviv – PNN – In a vote of four to three with one abstention, the Knesset Internal Affairs committee approved a bill that would mandate the revocation of Israeli citizenship from anyone with dual citizenship convicted of a “loyalty-related offense,” defined as terrorism or espionage. The bill will now be read before the Knesset general assembly.

In a major blow to the law’s passage, however, the Israeli internal security service Shin Bet said it had reversed its position and decided not to support the bill. A spokesman for Shin Bet said existing legislation already provided necessary punishment for loyalty offenses. Minister of Knesset (MK) Nitzan Horowitz of the left-leaning Meretz party said Shin Bet’s decision made the pending legislation “pointless and offensive.”

“The state already has authority to revoke citizenship, one which has been used on several occasions since its formation,” said Horowitz.

The bill is sponsored by David Rotem of the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party. Rotem argued in the committee session with an Arab MK Jamal Zahalka of the Balad party, calling him a “big traitor, not a small one.” Zahalka called Rotem a “fascist.”
