GAZA, (PIC)– The Palestinian interior ministry in Gaza allowed Fatah lawmaker Ashraf Juma’h to visit on Monday evening the detainees in Gaza jail in order to make sure there were no hunger strikers or people imprisoned for political reasons as he claimed earlier.

Juma’h was accompanied during his check visit to the rehabilitation center west of Gaza by Hamas MP Ismail Al-Ashqar, spokesman for the interior ministry Ihab Al-Ghussein, and director of rehabilitation centers Nasser Suleiman.

The Fatah lawmaker met with all detainees, including a number of Fatah supporters, who were jailed on charges of committing criminal offenses against other citizens in Gaza.

He listened to the inmates affiliated with Fatah inside the center and found his allegations about the hunger striker were not true.

The prisoners, for their part, affirmed to the MP that they are nicely treated by the prison administration and members of the interior ministry, and that all their needs they ask for are provided. They also denied they went on hunger strike.

However, the Fatah lawmaker, after he made sure that his claims about the hunger strike was unfounded, insisted that the inmates affiliated with Fatah were political detainees, although they were proven guilty in a court of law of killing citizens and committing different serious crimes.

Following the visit, senior Hamas official and lawmaker Ismail Al-Ashqar demanded in a statement Fatah MP Ashraf Juma’h to take back his remarks about the presence of hunger strikers in Gaza jails and work on allowing Hamas MPs to make a similar visit to Fatah jails in the West Bank.

Ashqar stressed that the interior ministry approved this visit in order to refute all claims and lies that were propagated by Fatah and the independent committee, pointing out that the visit will be aired on TV to confirm further the veracity of the reports issued by some human rights organizations who visited Gaza jails recently.

Earlier on the same day, the Palestinian interior ministry denied the presence of any political detainees in Gaza jails and described the remarks made by Ashraf Juma’h as contrary to the truth and misleading.
