THE Irishman leading the humanitarian effort in Gaza has been head-hunted by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to take up a new role, the Irish Independent has learned.

John Ging (45) had been in charge of a staff of more than 10,000 tasked with delivering education, health care and social services to over one million refugees for the past five years. But Mr Ging, who is originally from Portlaoise, is to be promoted to a new United Nations job at its headquarters in New York.

“John is very passionate about Gaza but he was called upon by the world’s top diplomat to do this and you don’t say ‘no’ to the world’s top diplomat,” a source said last night.

“I’m sure it will be with a very heavy heart that John leaves Gaza because he is so passionately committed but he has created a top team here which will ensure complete continuity in terms of policy.”

Mr Ging’s new role will be with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He declined to comment when contacted last night.
