The funeral procession for Yusef Ikhlayl devolved into clashes after Israeli soldiers attacked the convoy with tear gas canisters, according to Palestinian state-run news agency Wafa. Eyewitnesses said at least 40 were injured, most from tear gas inhalation but with reported injuries from rubber bullets.

Two Palestinians were arrested during the clashes: Ibrahim Fathi Bahr, 32, and Saddam Mahmoud Awad, 22. They were taken to an unknown location.

The settlers who allegedly shot Ikhlayl on Saturday were described by the Israeli military as being on a “hiking trip, which they did not inform the army about.” One of the settlers, quoted by Israeli online newspaper Ha’aretz, said he believed in “the right of Jews to travel their country.”
