Paraguayan Foreign Minister Hector Lacognata

Paraguay has become the latest Latin American country to recognize Palestine as “an independent and democratic state,” an official has announced.

Paraguayan Foreign Minister Hector Lacognata said on Friday that his government’s decision, following similar moves by other South American countries in recent months, is based on resolutions endorsed by the United Nations.

“With the failure of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the recognition of Palestine within 1967 borders is fundamentally based on international rights as is seen repeatedly in the United Nations resolutions related to the issue,” Reuters quoted Lacognata as saying.

Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Uruguay have recently recognized Palestinian statehood within the borders that existed before Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Israel objected Latin American countries’ recognition of a Palestinian state last month, labeling it as some “highly damaging interference.” It argued that these countries were never included in the Middle East talks.

Paraguay’s move comes just before a summit between Latin American and Arab countries, which is scheduled to be held in Lima and Peru in February.

More than 130 UN member states have already recognized the state of Palestine.
