CAIRO, (PIC)– A massive explosion on Saturday closed a pipeline running through the Egyptian Sinai peninsula supplying natural gas to Israel.

Israeli media outlets predicted a similar incident would take place a few days earlier.

El Arish residents said they heard a large explosion, which was discovered to have occurred between the cities of El Arish and Sheikh Zuweid just a few kilometers away from a residential area.

Egyptian officials have managed to close the pipe and said an investigation into the explosion will be made.

Emergency units have begun to contain the fire.

The Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper warned earlier that current instability in Egypt could be detrimental to the country’s supply of natural gas to Israel.

The electricity company’s back-up supply of natural gas would last for only a short time if the pipelines were disrupted, the paper said Sunday.

Egypt provides 40 per cent of the gas supply of Israel, which has made two billion dollars in yearly profits after the QIZ agreement signed in 2005, as well as another billion dollars a year from Egyptian gas sold in occupied Palestinian territories.
