NABLUS, (PIC)– Senior Fatah official Husam Khader said that the intended formation of a new de facto government in the West Bank came following personally motivated pressures from Fatah leaders, expressing his belief that this change would bring nothing new to the Palestinians.

Khader told Safa news agency on Wednesday that the growing popular discontent over the Fatah-controlled Palestinian authority (PA), the stalled political process, the failure of peace talks with Israel, price hikes and the leaked papers disclosed by Al-Jazeera satellite channel prompted Salam Fayyad’s government to resign.

The official pointed out that Fayyad was able to change some ministers who are accused of corruption or dereliction of duty rather than dismissing the whole cabinet, but he did so to absorb the street’s anger.

In a separate incident, the Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad said that Fatah faction asked de facto president Mahmoud Abbas to withdraw the finance portfolio from Fayyad and give it to Fatah members.

The newspaper said that Fatah revolutionary council demanded Abbas to make Fayyad choose between the presidency of the cabinet or the finance portfolio.

It quoted informed sources as saying that Fayyad, for his part, threatened Fatah leaders that the US financial aid to Fatah and its intuitions would be suspended if they insisted on him to leave the finance ministry.
