GAZA, (PIC)– Several prisoner rights groups in Europe will hold mid-March the first ever Conference on the Rights of Palestinian Prisoners at UN headquarters in Geneva, the Wa’id prisoner rights group announced.

“It constitutes an important precedent to expose Israel’s crimes against nearly 7,000 male and female prisoners, who include children, women and ill people,” said Wa’id media spokesperson Abdullah Qandil.

“The conference will give greater momentum for this forgotten cause, especially since the prisoners issue has suffered clear negligence in terms of international attention, and since the Geneva convention announced by the European Network to Support the Rights of the Palestinian Prisoners (Ufree) is regarded a recovery for the prisoners cause after loss it suffered in European forums due to lack of real previous steps focusing on the matter.”

Qandil said Wa’id will take part in the conference and will submit several memoranda on the latest status of the captives in Israeli prisons.

The conference is to be held by Ufree (Norway), Rights for All (Switzerland) and North-South 21 on March 11 at the UN headquarters in Geneva and will have heavy attendance by jurists, politicians and other interested parties.

Freed prisoners will be invited to give testimonies on prison conditions.
