Hundreds of university students have taken to the streets in Gaza to voice their protest against Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi and his regime’s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

The Palestinian students took to the streets of Gaza City on Tuesday, calling on Gaddafi to stand down and give in to the demands of the Libyan people, the Associated Press reported.

The demonstrators torched pictures of Gaddafi and chanted slogans against the 42-year-old Libyan autocrat.

They also criticized Gaddafi and other Arab leaders for not doing enough to bring forth a Palestinian statehood.

Meanwhile, Hamas leaders condemned the Libyan regime for using violence against its own people.

Hamas “strongly condemns the massacres, the airstrikes and the artillery fire against the Libyan people carried out by the Libyan regime,” the Islamic movement said in a statement.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged Libyan Gaddafi to show restraint and immediately stop the violence against the demonstrators who are demanding democratic change.

The UN chief also expressed outrage over the reported use of live rounds, warplanes and helicopters to crack down on the protests.

According to the International Federation for Human Rights, as many as 400 people have so far been killed in the Libyan revolution.
