RAMALLAH, (PIC)– Thousands of Gazans have been stranded abroad for over a month during changes in Egypt that have hindered their entry into the Cairo International Airport, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) has said.

Palestinians returning to the Gaza Strip must transit Egypt before crossing over to the strip through Rafah.

”Since the outbreak of the Egyptian revolution Palestinians have been denied entry to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Rafah land crossing was closed 30 January 2011 in both directions,” the rights center said in a statement on Sunday.

The border crossing was later reopened for commuters entering the Gaza Strip on 17 February and then in both directions on 22 February, allowing hundreds of Palestinians to travel and return.

But the situation grew worse after airlines placed restrictions on Palestinians traveling to Gaza through Egypt.

Thousands of Palestinians including dozens of families who had traveled abroad have so far been affected, the PCHR statement says, adding that they include students, patients and employees who may be at risk of losing their jobs.

The PCHR called on PA chief Mahmoud Abbas to instruct Palestinian embassies to do what they can to ensure their speedy return, as well as the Egyptian government to authorize entry to Egypt and allow their passage to the Gaza Strip
