RAMALLAH, (PIC)– The prisoner studies center in Ramallah has warned that provocative searches against Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons could spark an outbreak inside the prisons.

The warning came after a three-hour surprise strip search against resistance leaders Ahmed Saadat and Jamal Abul-Haija.

The Israeli Prison Service has intensified surprise night raids, said prisoner studies center director Raafat Hamdouna, adding that searches, prison transfers and isolations have been taken as a policy to penalize prisoners ”for the most trivial reasons”.

He went on to say that isolated prisoners are endangered by the prison who are further aided by the Jewish prison population, and have also been suffering psychologically from the cells’ darkness and many insects, and their inability to see the sun or get fresh air, and the health effects of high humidity in the cells.

Hamdouna called on the Red Cross and other rights groups, Palestinian factions and the media to help the prisoners by pressuring the IPS to end increasing abuses.
