NABLUS (Ma’an) — The Detainees’ Center in Nablus condemned Thursday’s overnight arrest raid during which some 100 residents of Awarta, primarily women, were rounded up from the Nablus-area village.

The mass detentions, a statement from the center said, “go against the human rights of the residents.”

The roundups were illegal and arbitrary, the center said.

Villagers were reportedly detained in connection with the murder of five residents of a settlement, including three young children. The family was stabbed to death while sleeping in Itamar, adjacent to Awarta.

Israeli officials appear to be focusing their investigation on Awarta, though others have been questioned. Police and government officials have pointed the finger at Palestinian suspects.
