(RTTNews) – Rival Palestinian outfits, Fatah and Hamas– which runs Gaza– have thrashed out an agreement to resolve their differences, reports said on Wednesday.

The deal brokered by Egypt came at the end of secret talks involving representatives from both sides. The agreement is on the formation of an interim government and holding of elections in the coastal enclave. Fatah Party headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has been at loggerheads with militant Hamas for nearly five years now.

Although Egyptian and Palestinian spokesmen briefed media persons on the reconciliation deal, a formal announcement regarding this is still awaited.

Following Hamas’ victory in the 2006 Palestinian elections, the two outfits fell-out with each other, resulting in the ultra-conservative Hamas taking over Gaza in 2007.

Earlier this month, thousands of Palestinians inspired by the wave of pro-democracy that swept north Africa and the Middle East, staged rallies in Gaza demanding reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

A Hamas government spokesman said Fatah and Hamas had agreed in principle on a reconciliation deal with a formal signing to take place in a week’s time. The signing ceremony in Cairo will be attended by Abbas, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal and representatives from various Palestinian outfits.

Hamas and Fatah had come tantalizingly close to striking an agreement last year. However, Hamas backed out at the last minute alleging that some of the terms had been revised unilaterally.

There has been an uptick in violence in Gaza recently following a missile strike on an Israeli school bus which killed a teenager. Back in 2007, Israeli forces had carried out full fledged military operation–named ‘Cast Lead’– in Gaza, which began in December 2008 and ended in January 2009.

Israel is outraged. An agreement or unity between Palestinians is their biggest nightmare, for rule and divide serves their real intention: Ethnic cleansing and annexation of the whole of Palestine.
