Amman – PNN – Jordan’s King Abdullah II told the Washington Post that the chances for peace between Israel and Palestine are low after various peace initiatives taken over the past month have fallen flat.

Abdullah told the Washington Post that the political shift to the right has made the Israeli government unable to make the kind of compromises necessary for peace with Palestine.

He also said the recent Arab Spring democratic uprisings have opened a new chance for negotiations, but after initiatives from the US and French governments and the EU have not been taken up yet, the window for peace will soon close.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected US President Barack Obama’s calls for negotiations to be based on 1967 borders with land swaps, saying the 1967 borders were “indefensible” for Israel.

Abdullah projected a Middle East more hostile to Israel as newly-democratic governments “seek to exploit popular resentments,” said the Washington Post.

“2011 will be, I think, a very bad year for peace, said Abdullah to the Washington Post.

He even suggested the situation may turn more and more violent saying, “when there’s a status quo, usually what shakes everybody up is some sort of military confrontation.”

As Palestinians see the chances for a negotiated peace slipping away there is an increased chance of uprising, said Abdullah.

Netanyahu has expressed concern that a third Palestinian intifada, or uprising, will erupt soon. Previous intifadas occurred in the late 1980s and early 2000s.

“Although we will continue to try to bring both sides to the table, I am the most pessimistic I have been in 11 years,” said Abdullah.
