The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says the United Nations should recognize a Palestinian state on all the Palestinian territory.

Senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya called on the Palestinian legislative council on Sunday to “apply for recognition of a Palestinian state on all the Palestinian territory and confirmation of the right of Palestinians to live within the borders of this state,” AFP reported.

Hayya made the remarks at a meeting of the Palestinian legislative council in the Gaza Strip, which was attended by democratically-elected Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

“We appeal to the UN to invalidate the entity (Israel) that took the decision to establish itself on the land of another,” Hayya said.

He also called on the international community to “apply pressure to ensure the implementation of international resolutions, particularly those that uphold the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.”

Palestinian officials have been campaigning to achieve UN recognition for an independent state based on the pre-1967 borders at the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly, which begins on September 20.

On Friday, Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas announced that he will apply to the UN Security Council for full UN membership of a Palestinian state. This comes while Hamas has considered the plan as a risky move.

The US has made it clear to Abbas that it will outright veto any request presented to the UN Security Council for making the Palestinian state a new member.

However, Washington cannot block the UN General Assembly’s vote for changing Palestine’s status in the world body from entity to state.
