Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas arrives at his hotel in New York, Monday, Sep. 19, 2011.

Acting Palestinian Authority (PA) Chief Mahmoud Abbas has urged Israel to recognize Palestine as an independent state ahead of a formal request for Palestinian UN membership.

Abbas made the remarks after he arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 66th General Assembly session of United Nations, which begins on Tuesday.

Later this week, Abbas is set to submit a formal request that the UN admit a Palestinian state as a full member of the world body.

The United States and Israel have strongly opposed the bid.

Washington has already said it would veto any such bid in the UN Security Council (UNSC).

However, if the effort is blocked at the UNSC, the Palestinians say they will turn to the General Assembly, where they are expected to easily win admission.

More than 100 countries have so far officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state based on the 1967 borders.

Palestinians say their decision comes in frustration after years of failed negotiations with Israel.
