Materials:

Chalk

Crayons

Pencils

Ball-Point Pens

9”x12” White Construction Paper Cut in Half

Stapler

Staple Remover

Rulers

9” x 18” Construction Paper for Mounting

Glue Sticks

Various cut-outs of skylines, bridges, etc.

Set Up:

Each student will receive the white construction paper cut in half
(both pieces), a ruler, a sharpened pencil and ball-point pen

Each table will need several pieces of chalk (at least one or more
piece per seated student), a box of crayons, a stapler and a stapler
remover

At the front, set up a table with construction paper for mounting and
glue sticks

Set various skyline scenes around the classroom – on tables, on the
walls, etc. OR set a small pile on each table and have students
choose from that.

Class Time:

Start class with a brief discussion on line (refer to “Definition of Line”
document). Discuss how lines are found all around us (in nature, in
architecture), and the different types of lines (thick, thin, long, short,
curved, straight, etc.).
The project works best if the Classroom Coordinator walks the entire group
through the project step by step.

Project steps:

Select a skyline (or other) scene from those placed around the room
– or create your own. Draw the scene on one of the halves of white
paper. Keep the scene simple, but be sure to vary the types of lines
in your drawing.

Upon completion of your drawing, choose a blue, green, brown,
yellow, orange or purple piece of chalk and color the other half of
white paper. Color it completely, going in one, back-and-forth
motion only.

Using a blue, green, brown, yellow, orange or purple crayon, color
over the chalk. Color it completely, in one, back-and-forth motion
only. Do NOT use the same color as the chalk.

Using either a red or orange crayon, add a third layer of color on
your piece of paper.

Take both pieces of paper and staple them together – place the
colored piece of paper on your table, color side up. Place your
drawing on top of that, drawing side up. Staple the pieces of paper
together in all four corners, close to the edge.

Using either your pencil or the ball-point pen, draw back over the
skyline drawing, pressing firmly so the color will lift properly. When
finished, check to make sure the color transferred well. If so,
remove the staples.

Carefully pull the papers apart. Mount both sides on colored, 9”x18”
paper.
