History

In 1995, the WBLAS District eliminated Otter Lake Elementary’s full-time Art Teacher position. Thankfully, OLE had many art-loving families who were determined to keep art in school. Art in the Classroom (AITC) was created: a completely volunteer-based education program designed to teach students about the artistic concepts of Line, Shape, Color, and Texture and to offer hands-on art project time each month.

In 1996, volunteers reached out to the Minneapolis Institute of Art and launched Art Adventure (AA): the museum’s Art Appreciation program, which gives children the opportunity to see and discuss masterful works of art.

The above two OLE art programs are graciously funded by the OLE PTA and are fully depend on parent volunteers and community supporters.

In 2009, OLE formed a partnership with the White Bear Center for the Arts. Professional instructors visit students five times a year to explore various art concepts and mediums. This program is funded by the school district and occurs in ALL WBL district elementary schools.

This year, OLE will host an Artist-In-Residence, Lisa Servatius, to teach one art lesson to each classroom in October and will focus on STEM concepts. This program is funded by Otter Lake PTA as a one-time expense.
