Contour lines can make the artwork look more interesting and realistic. While straight lines may look flat, curved lines lend dimension and shape to a drawing. With blind contour line drawing, the artist never picks the pen up off the page. The artist, Alexander Calder, utilized this technique to create drawings and sculptures of faces and circus animals using pen and paper—and even wire! In this activity, students hold mirrors and look only at their image while they draw their face without lifting the pen off the paper.
