Lines are the most basic element of drawing; they’re basically a moving dot. Lines can go up and down, back and forth, straight or curvy. Artists use contour lines to make art work look more interesting and realistic. In this activity, students will trace a leaf with concentric contour lines to create dynamic and dimensional images.

CONTOUR
A contour is a line that defines or bounds anything — defines its edge. There are more contours on any complex object than the outside edge. There are many more subtle contours that can be seen and drawn. Things like folds and color changes can be represented by contour lines— anything that has an edge.

February: Geometric Shape
Project: Paul Klee Geometric Castle and Sun
The project is based on Paul Klee’s Castle and Sun painting. Students will be creating their own Castle and Sun piece using construction paper crayons on black paper. They will trace pre-cut, cardboard geometric shapes to create their castle.
Project: Kandinsky Concentric Circles

Wassily Kandinsky “Squares with Concentric Circles”, 1913

This project was originally written as a geometric shape project; however it may also be used to explore the link between emotion and color. Kandinsky was a fan of all the arts, including music. He believed that the emotion of a painting can be projected through the use of color. The students will be listening to different types of music, while painting simple concentric circles. We are experimenting to see if the emotion of a song will influence the color choices of our students.
