The latest trip to the cave system was part of the Mulu Caves Project, which has been mapping and collecting data on Gunung Mulu since 1978. Plans for 2011 include taking precise laser measurements of Sarawak Chamber, the world’s largest cave chamber.

A Grand, Gloomy and Peculiar PlaceMammoth Cave National Park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River valley and hilly country of south central Kentucky. This is the world’s longest cave system, with more than 365 miles explored. Early guide Stephen Bishop called the cave a «grand, gloomy and peculiar place,» but its vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned its name: Mammoth.

Mammoth Cave is the world’s longest known cave. In fact it is so long that if the second and third longest caves in the world were joined together, Mammoth Cave would still be the planet’s longest cave and have nearly 100 miles left over!

Native Americans of the Early Woodland period gathered minerals from Mammoth Cave between 2,000 and 4,000 years ago … no one knows why. Objects they left behind – slippers, cane torches, gourds, and mussel shells – remain perfectly preserved in the cave.

This 70 million years old underground cave is 40 meters high and contains several large, deep lakes. A river is flowing through it, so the transportation is done only by boat. 11 km long water canals were discovered recently. Some of them lead to a place called “Island.” A lot of ancient artworks add to the beauty of the cave. Animals, hunting scenes, bows and arrows can be seen on the walls. Another cave recognized as world’s heritage by UNESCO is the Phong Nha Cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam. The 7729 meters long cave system offers spectacular sight of 14 grottos and plenty of underground rivers. The cave is also known as kingdom of grottos. Cueva de los Cristales (The Crystal Cave) is part of Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was discovered in 2000 by miners while excavating a new tunnel. The 300 meters deep cave contain some of the largest crystals ever found on Earth. The largest one found until today is 11 meters in length, 4 meters in diameter and 55 tons weight. Although the scenery is amazing, people must be careful when enter the cave because of the sharpness of crystals. However, no one can endure inside for long. The temperature is about 58 C degrees and humidity is 90 to 100 percent. Kitam Cave, near Ibri contains rare and very beautiful gypsum flowers and hairs, these are delicate fibrous crystals formed by rainwater which a draft of air can move them.

Caves in Oman are given a set of grades, which apply to the normal route to reach the deepest point of the cave. The first grade represents easy to traverse caves while moderate caves are denoted as second grade.

Omani Caves which has atleast some slight hazard are graded as three. Grade four represents caves which pose some hazard or have large underground pitches. The highest grade (five) are taken by those which have difficult sections or large & wet underground pitches.

National Geographic presents The World’s Biggest Cave, a TV special that gives us a close-up look at Son Doong, a huge recently-discovered underground labyrinth in Vietnam.

In 2009, a team of British cavers investigated a recently uncovered cave in a remote Vietnamese jungle. The Son Doong cave is enormous; can it be larger than the current world-record holder? The explorers traveled for mile

s through the cave before hitting a 46-foot-high wall. Now, follow the team as they return to Son Doong to finish exploring the cave and climb the wall. Will Son Doong prove to be the worlds biggest cave? And what secrets are undiscovered inside this unique ecosystem?

Gyokusendo CaveJust 10 kilometers south of Naha Airport this cave can be reached by bus or car in less than an hour. It is the second-largest cave system found in Japan and has over 800 meters of passageways open to the public.

The cave has small streams, waterfalls, stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming over the past 300,000 years. It is well lit and designed with safety of visit

ors in mind.

Hand-railed metal stairs and walkways make walking the length of this attraction enjoyable. But caution is advised. The passages may be slippery in places where moisture has accumulated on the chromed decking.

Motion detectors operate pin-wheel controlled lighting, putting on a psychedelic show of colors on the moist stone icicles (stalactites) overhead. Small streams and waterfalls may be heard trickling throughout the cavern and, in places, pools of water give off a rich, blue glow from strategically placed underwater lights.

The trickiest challenge for the expedition team was to find a way over the Great Wall of Vietnam, an overhanging mass of flowstone that blocked the way deep inside Hang Son Doong.

The Jeita Grotto is a compound of two separate but interconnected karstic limestone caves: the upper grotto and lower grotto. The cave is situated in the Nahr Al-Kalb valley, locality of Jeita, near the Lebanese capital Beirut. The caves have formed over millions of years due to the dissolution of limestone. The 2130 meters long upper cave isn’t entirely accessible for tourist; only 750 meters can

be visited via a specially conceived walkway. Access of the rest remains restricted due to ecological reasons. A great variety of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, mushrooms, ponds, curtains and draperies can be seen in the upper cave. Characteristic for the lower cave is the underwater river, broken up by several small cataracts and rapids, and the lake named Dark Lake. It’s full with wonderful speleothemes. It is accessible only by electric boats for a distance of 500 meters.
