1. Vincent van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853–29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. His work had a great influence on modern art because of its striking colors and emotional power. He suffered from anxiety and fits of mental illness. When he was 37, he died from shooting himself in the chest. While his paintings reflected the southern sun in France and often contained bright colors, his life was the complete opposite. He suffered from epilepsy and depression. Though having been a painter for decades, Vincent van Gogh didn’t become famous until the end of his life. He was so unknown that not many even knew of his death.

2. Claude Monet

Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French impressionist artist. One of his most famous paintings was called Water Lilies, which he repeated many times in various conditions. His work and other Impressionists’ paintings were rejected by society and art exhibitions because it went against the traditional style and method of painting. Impressionism continued to live on past Monet’s death and set the foundation for Post-Impressionism. Monet struggled with depression, poverty and illness throughout his life. He died in 1926.

3. Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer. He wrote horror stories and poems. He is known as an American Romantic Movement writer who often focused on macabre, mystery, and is the first to write a detective-fiction short story. He had hoped to be become a successful writer and make a living by doing so, but his life went otherwise. He was moving from place to place to in order to keep publishing his work and attempting to stay out of legal trouble due to excessive drinking. However, in 1849, Poe died of what doctors say to be a combination of many possible things, ranging from suicide, to rabies, to heart disease. While Poe’s work was published, he never made much money, and never received the fame he has today.

4. Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei – (15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was an Italian physicist, astronomer, and instrument maker. He is most remembered today for his conflict with the Catholic Church but he was also one of the first to discover sunspots, moon craters, and even lunar mountains. He was often criticized by those heavily involved in religion, as they believed that the earth did not move to revolve around the sun. He was accused of heresy by Pope Urban VIII and was put on house arrest until his death. While Galileo did make himself known, his theories were hardly accepted during his lifetime. However, today, Galileo stands as the father of modern physics and his work is highly praised.

5. Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 in Eisenach – 28 July 1750 in Leipzig) was a German composer and organist. He lived in the last part of the Baroque period. During his lifetime, Bach was better known as an organist than a composer. Few of his works were even published during his lifetime. Still Bach’s musical compositions were admired by those who followed in his footsteps, including Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. His reputation received a substantial boost in 1829 when German composer Felix Mendelssohn reintroduced Bach’s “Passion According to St. Matthew.”
