I’m going to make this quick. What gets me most excited about this new
console, is that all of the old Wii games *AND CONTROLLERS* work with
it. Considering I’ve already made a sizable investment in all those
peripherals, it doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch to buy the
next console and accompanying controller, assuming it isn’t
ridiculously overpriced, of course. It’s as if the console is coming
in to our houses already jam-packed with possibilities – everything
that was not used well before, still has the opportunity to be fully
fleshed out, now with HD graphics that are more common and affordable.

Basically, I still have faith that Nintendo will fulfill the promise
of the Wii with this new console. All of those games they promised to
making full use of Wii Motion Plus, or the balance board, feel like
they may actually be coming out for this console. It’s delayed, true,
but the mere fact that nearly everything we have thus far for our Wiis
will be made compatable with the new console lends credence to this
hope. I just hope it’s not unfounded.

As for the 3D, it seems like you are saying that this move to 3D will
destroy the home console gaming market, for Sony, Nintendo, and
Microsoft if they follow suit. That is just my two cents, however. I
really could not care less about 3D. The only reason people seem to be
gravitating towards it is because graphic output cannot really get
much better than it is now, and it represents the Next Step.

Wishing you all the best, and sincerely hoping (in vain) you stay
around after Music Post #100,

Dedicated Reader

I bolded the above where I burst out laughing.

I’m not laughing at you, reader, but I can’t see how anyone could possibly say that Nintendo intends to fulfill the potential of the Wii now. The year is 2011. What are the great motion controllre games of the Wii not named Wii Sports? Exactly.

Wii U is to RUN AWAY from the Wii, not fulfill its mission. They hate its mission!

If the Wii was to fulfill itself, you’d get more games like Wii Sports (such as an arcade RPG with swordplay controls) and more games like Mario 5. The mission of the Wii is Old School. Nintendo knows this because the original design of the Wii software was to mimic NES software. And they touched an untapped vein of riches. Any doubt of that can be cleared up with Mario 5’s shocking selling of hardware (selling out the Wii) which Nintendo did not expect.

People like Miyamoto and Iwata (and Sakamoto, etc.) have nothing but contempt for the Old School. Sure, they’ll do things Old School like the Tanooki Suit but only in a superficial way. The substance of the Old School, the actual endless arcade-like replayability of the gameplay, is denied, dismissed, and discouraged. The Old School do not fit into Nintendo’s long range 3d output plans. These include the Wii Sports crowd.

I know people don’t like hearing this, but what am I to do? Lie to you guys? If you liked the Wii and didn’t like the Gamecube, Nintendo has contempt for you. You are an obstacle to them making the games they want and to transform Nintendo into a 3d output platform company.
