No, this is normal Miyamoto. Not even Iwata is allowed to tell him what to do.

It wasn’t until 2d Mario’s massive sales that the board is forcing Miyamoto to continue 2d Mario. I believe sometime after Super Mario World, Miyamoto got free reign to do whatever he wants and no one can tell him to do anything. Not even the market itself!
