<p>Here is Miyamoto blaming marketing for the Virtual Boy&#8217;s failure:</p>
<div><em><strong>Miyamoto:</strong> </em><em>Yeah. It can&#8217;t be helped. Which is exactly why at the time I thought it was extremely important to portray it properly, including advertisements and sorts to the effect that it&#8217;s not a full-scale platform.</em></div>
<div><em><strong>Iwata:</strong> </em><em>But you weren&#8217;t a main player on that device, so you couldn&#8217;t say anything.</em></div>
<div><em><strong>Miyamoto:</strong> </em><em>I didn&#8217;t have the authority.</em>We just didn&#8217;t &#8216;understand&#8217; the Virtual Boy. Damn that marketing!</p>
<p>Nintendo has created an alternate reality where they never make anything wrong. If a product doesn&#8217;t sell, the error is always in the marketing. Always.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t expect Nintendo executives to admit the console&#8217;s flaws this early in the life cycle. But I do expect them not to talk to us as if we are idiots.</p>
