This is a funny and very interesting video which discusses the problems with Nintendo today. I immediately thought of you when I heard Zan tell Mario (talking of the Wii U), “This isn’t innovation, this is f*cking weird… This is innovation for the sake of innovation.” I thought you and my fellow readers might enjoy watching it.

Well, I found that video uncomfortable to watch. Nevertheless, the point made is good.

Like the mystery of Bermuda Triangle or the pyramids, the biggest mystery of Video Game Land was: “Why did Nintendo abandon the greatest selling and acclaimed video game series, Super Mario Brothers, to make 3d games with Mario who also happened to talk like a munchkin? For all those years, I thought the answer was because Nintendo was caught up with the 3d trends and thought, “Every game has to be in 3d now.” I thought when Nintendo realized that this was not the case, we would see Super Mario Brothers return with all its glory and begin seeing a renaissance with the Zelda and Metroid series as well.

That great mystery has now been surpassed by an even bigger one. After making a game console that took the world by storm and is the company’s best selling home console, why is Nintendo making a console that is opposite of everything of that first one aside from the brand; why is the Wii U an anti-Wii?

The only answer I think applies is due to certain high standing individuals inside Nintendo (ex: Miyamoto) who insist the path of gaming evolve on the path they wish it to go. In Iwata’s metaphor, the gamer is not allowed to be king. Nintendo is going coup d’etat against the natural gaming order.
