On the trail I discovered what was important to me and what I really wanted in life. In the quiet days of hiking in the wilderness, free from the distractions of modern day living and away from an environment that expected me to play a certain role, I discovered my authentic self. I’d had to overcome fear to face many challenges on the trail and, drawing on that strength, I returned home with a new clarity that I was free to pursue my future in any way I chose.

For me that means living a peaceful and simple life in nature, free from the noise, busyness, pollution, stress and rampant consumerism that seem an intrinsic part of modern day living.

What is needed for a life lived well and full? Not much as it turns out. I’ve never been happier than I was with 12 kg of belongings for five months on the Te Araroa Trail, living simply and sleeping in a tent each night surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. Pandora’s Box has been opened, and for now I dedicate myself full time to exploring beautiful places in nature around the world, learning about the environment’s healing effect on the mind and body, and writing to share my experiences.

In our overly hectic, sanitised and manufactured lives, I believe modern society has lost a vital connection to the natural environment – a connection which has the potential to promote good health, peace and harmony to the planet and all its inhabitants.

If this resonates with you, follow me as I challenge the norms of modern living, in search of meaning, simplicity and happiness in nature.
